Balls Falls and the Mill L.V. Hogue painted the mill at Ball Falls many times over his lifetime. This painting is another fine example. In his lifetime, the Balls Fall Conservation Area was open to the public; now, one must pay to enter. So, if he was alive today it would be unlikely that the falls and mill would have been a frequent subject for his painting.

Brown's Acquaduct Mill This mill, originally known as the Aqueduct Mills, was built by Moses Cook of St. Catharines sometime around 1850. It was later purchased by Brown Bros., who moved the building to Dennistoun St., Welland; where it stood till it was struck by lightening and burned to the ground on 1912-05-24. Creation Working Sketch L. V. Hogue made this sketch prior to painting the final Creation painting for McMaster University. For many years this sketch hung in a location where the sun shone on it for a part of each day; the unfaded blue background is visible around the edges of the sketch. The pre-printed dark blue paper upon which he painted was the back cover of an Mitoyo Engineering Co. calendar.

Light at Point Abino This image is from a Polaroid snapshot of the painting sent to L.V. Hogue's daughter. In the letter that accompanied the Polaroid, L.V. Hogue said that he had watched a TV show that demonstrated painting on a black background and so he tried this technique with this painting. He used a black & white, daytime, photo of the lighthouse as the inspiration for this painting. The Point Abino lighthouse is situated at the eastern end of Lake Erie near Crystal Beach and the town of Fort Erie, Ontario.

M.C.R.R. Bridge at Forks Creek The bridge was originally part of the Michigan Central Railroad (Canada Division) and this bridge spans what is now called Big Forks Creek, about 11 km. east of Welland, ON (near Becketts Bridge, ON). As of 2019, this bridge was still standing (link to Google Maps location). The bridge crosses the creek about 200m before the creek joins the Welland River. The painting is showing the south face of the bridge (the bridge runs almost exactly east-west).

The Bluenose Sailboat Gift to Christopher Rath from L. V. Hogue. Hand written caption reads, "The Bluenose as she won the fishermen's race in 1930. You may see her on the 10 cent piece Chris. The Witch Tree (Hollow Tree on Sunset Bay) L. V. Hogue and his wife and son would picnic on Sunset Bay; and Jamie, his son, would climb this tree. Jamie always called this "The Witch Tree" because of it shape.

They Called Him "Chief", and Grandson Each summer, L.V. Hogue and his wife, Betty, would have a booth at the annual Chippawa Park Art in the Park festival: he would paint, she would knit and keep him company, and they might sell a painting or two. One year, a small boy spent time at the booth; seemingly fixated upon a particular painting. L.V. Hogue was inspired to paint the boy; and the "Chief" with the boy is a gentleman from another of the festival booths. L.V. Hogue painted very few portraits, and always said that he wasn†˘t very good at painting people. The story behind this painting was told by L.V. Hogue's grandson, Jack.

Welland Canal at McCormick St. Welland Canal seen from its bank near McCormick St. (which dead-ends at the canal). Merritt island and the Main St. lift bridge are in the background. The concrete object on the far bank of the canal is the Merritt Island side of the Welland River aquaduct. Follow these links to see an arial photo (from 1943 of this section of the canal): Image or Google Earth. L. V. Hogue often stopped after work to fish from this spot on the canal, and his daughter, Ruth, remembers him bringing home freshly-caught pike for dinner. L. V. Hogue and his family lived on McCormick St. in 1940 or 1941.

Welland Firehall No. 1 One of L.V. Hogue's last paintings; as his eyesight was failing. The building in the scene is the original Welland wooden Firehouse, which burned down in 1913; it stood where the current Firehall is: the corner of Division Street and Helems Avenue. The horses are pulling the water wagon used to fight fires. L.V. Hogue used a photo in the Welland Museum as his model for this painting (a copy of that photo can be found on page 20 of the Reminiscing About Welland PDF file on the Welland.ca website). He gave this painting to his grandson, Jack. He told Jack that he had a lot of trouble painting the horses hooves.
