Betty Hogue Remembrance

Shortly after the death of his wife, L.V. Hogue painted this card and sent it to his daughter, Ruth. The small watercolour was created specifically to contain the obituary that is glued to the painting.

Brown's Acquaduct Mill

This mill, originally known as the Aqueduct Mills, was built by Moses Cook of St. Catharines sometime around 1850. It was later purchased by Brown Bros., who moved the building to Dennistoun St., Welland; where it stood till it was struck by lightening and burned to the ground on 1912-05-24. Creation Working Sketch

L. V. Hogue made this sketch prior to painting the final Creation painting for McMaster University. For many years this sketch hung in a location where the sun shone on it for a part of each day; the unfaded blue background is visible around the edges of the sketch.

"DeCoo 81" is written on the back of the frame containing the painting. Decew Falls was often painted by L.V. Hogue. In L.V. Hogue's own notes, Decew is always spelled using its original spelling, "Decue".

Light at Point Abino

This image is from a Polaroid snapshot of the painting sent to L.V. Hogue's daughter. In the letter that accompanied the Polaroid, L.V. Hogue said that he had watched a TV show that demonstrated painting on a black background and so he tried this technique with this painting. He used a black & white, daytime, photo of the lighthouse as the inspiration for this painting. The Point Abino lighthouse is situated at the eastern end of Lake Erie near Crystal Beach and the town of Fort Erie, Ontario.

Maymont Homestead

When L. V. Hogue's in-laws (John & Annabella McIlvride) first arrived in Canada, from Scotland, they homesteaded near Maymont, SK (from 1905 to 1912). This is the house on the homestead plot; which still stands today, but is falling down and in disrepair.

Given to Bruce & Marylin (L. V. Hogue's nephew) in the mid-1960s. They subsequently passed the painting along to their daugther in 1977. This pencil sketch is dated 6-40 or 5-40 (it's not clear); i.e., June or May, 1940. The colour of the paper has probably darkened since the picture was first sketched. Shotgun & Powderhorn

It was painted in 1969 for Ken A. (a Whiting Equipment co-worker of L.V. Hogue's) and shows Ken's shotgun and homemade powder horn. L.V.&Hogue staged the shotgun against a chair in a cabin, and other items in the room are "hidden" within the artwork (coat, boots, etc.).

This painting was a wedding gift to Art & Joanne L., in 1973. Arrowhead Provincial Park is near Huntsville, ON. The chute shown in the painting is Stubb's Falls on the Little East River.

The Bluenose Sailboat

Gift to Christopher Rath from L. V. Hogue. Hand written caption reads, "The Bluenose as she won the fishermen's race in 1930. You may see her on the 10 cent piece Chris. You may cut these out if you wish. Grandpa." In 1965, L. V. Hogue and his wife shipped a plywood box containing paintings to their daughter's family, George & Ruth Rath, and L. V. Hogue had painted three pictures on one of the plywood panels. The other two pictures were "Thimble the Donkey" and "??". George Rath cut the panel into pieces, framing them with 1x1s that were also part of the box.

L. V. Hogue and his wife and son would picnic on Sunset Bay; and Jamie, his son, would climb this tree. Jamie always called this "The Witch Tree" because of it shape.

The text L. V. Hogue has written on the left side of the painting reads, "Ellen, Thimble is a friendly donkey. Ask Chris or Dad to cut him out. Grandpa" In 1965, L. V. Hogue and his wife shipped a plywood box containing paintings to their daughter's family, George & Ruth Rath, and L. V. Hogue had painted three pictures on one of the plywood panels. Welland Canal at McCormick St.

Welland Canal seen from its bank near McCormick St. (which dead-ends at the canal). Merritt island and the Main St. lift bridge are in the background. The concrete object on the far bank of the canal is the Merritt Island side of the Welland River aquaduct. L. V. Hogue often stopped after work to fish from this spot on the canal, and his daughter, Ruth, remembers him bringing home freshly-caught pike for dinner. L. V. Hogue and his family lived on McCormick St. in 1940 or 1941.
